Detail & Scale has wisely decided to update their F-100 book first published 40 years ago in 1980 and republished in 1989. Just released is an updated and expanded volume of this iconic jet, a symbol of the 1950s and the Vietnam War, and the first of the Century Series of USAF jet fighters.
The North American F-100 had a service career that spanned 25 years, concluding its service life with the 181st TFG/113th TFS, Indiana Air National Guard, on 13 November 1979 during ceremonies at Hulman Field.
The revised edition of Detail & Scale’s F-100 Super Sabre is greatly expanded over the original 1980 book and follows the established format of the Detail and Scale books with sections on Design and Development; Operational Service, including the Vietnam War and foreign air forces. Detailed photos provide an ideal reference guide for modelers, along with scale drawings, and the all-important model kit reviews and critique.
I found the detailed photography to be especially well done with excellent cockpit photography to allow the modeler to accurately build and detail the cockpit. There are 36 photos of the cockpit, ejection seat and canopy, enough to satisfy the serious modeler. And there are an additional 100 detail photos of just about every aspect of the F-100.
Finally there are the famous Detail and Scale kits reviews. There are 25 reviews in all covering models past and present, from the miniature Busch 1/175th scale F-100C to Trumpeter’s new 1/32nd scale F-100D, and including RE Resins 1/144th scale F-100D and F-100F. Some reviews include a photo of the built up model and construction notes provided by the builder. I find the kit reviews an essential part of Detail and Scale books and a useful guide to purchasing the kit of your choice.
This book is well done with excellent photography and will be a worthy addition to any modeler’s reference library.
