Tamiya's 1/48 scale
P-51D Mustang

by Brian Bourdon

North American P-51D Mustang

Description

This is Tamiya’s quarter scale P-51D.  I would consider this an OOB build, even though the cockpit benefited from the addition of Eduard’s Zoom set as well as a few odds and ends.   The canopy rails and the gun sight were repurposed from an ancient photo etch fret designed for the Monogram Mustang.  And, as I didn’t fancy fussing with Tamiya’s two piece sliding canopy, I replaced it with a more user friendly version sourced from my spares box.

The exterior was painted with a mix of XF16 (aluminum) and X11 (Chrome) in equal amounts as per Tamiya’s recommendation.  I’m not sure that this exactly replicates the waxy finish of the real aircraft, though I suspect it is close enough.

I find Tamiya decals difficult to work with and so the artwork for Lt/Col John C. Meyers’ colorful ‘Petit 2nd’ was borrowed from a Hasegawa sheet.

The stencils and national markings are vintage Super Scale.
